Boredom - Guards armed with carbines are posted on seven towers
along the stockade perimeter, keeping watch around the clock.
A machine gun, mounted on a pedestal, is visible through the windows,
its trigger sealed to prevent accidents. During daylight there is often
a soccer-game to watch. At night the guards are kept on their toes by telephone
calls and visits from the sergeant-of-the-guard and the officer-of-the-day.
Sleeping on duty is punished with solitary confinement and a chance to
catch up with sleep in the same jailhouse used for Germans being disciplined.
