    Although the living conditions were very Spartan, the German POWs in many cases had it better off than their fellow countrymen in war torn Europe. They had sufficient housing, good food and plenty of work if they wanted it. For recreation they had sports, crafts, theater and movies. The camp even produced its own newspaper in German language.
